Registration starts for Aspen Valley Hospital Health Fair

Aspen Valley Hospital’s health fair offers an array of tests for affordable rates. They include the Complete Blood Count for $30, the Hemoglobin A1C (measures the patient’s average blood sugar levels) for $40, hsCardio CRP (helps assess heart attack risk) for $40, a vitamin D test for $50, and two tests measuring thyroid function, each for $30.

Appointments are required. No walk-ins are allowed. Register for appointments starting on Sept. 13 when the times for the health fair and a registration link will be posted on the hospital’s website. The health fair is Oct. 20-21. Payment is required at the time the test is taken. Registrants must be 18 or older.

Participants must take the responsibility of forwarding expenses they think can be reimbursed to their insurance companies.

Basalt will host Mental Fitness Fair fundraiser

There will be carnival games and lawn games like egg-in-the spoon races at the Sept. 23 Triangle Park event in the Willits Town Center. But the Headquarters Mental Health Fitness Fair also raises money for the Mental Health Fund, which helps pay for therapists from Aspen to Parachute who are treating uninsured and low-income patients. There will be breakout sessions where attendees can learn more about counseling resources in Roaring Fork Valley.

The Mental Health Fund says that most of its requests for help, 27%, come from Aspen and Snowmass followed by 20% for Basalt and 20% from Carbondale.

Author discusses her book about 18,000 miles she hiked and climbed

Shayla “Kiddo” Paradeis wrote “Footprint of a Heart” about what happened after she moved from Manhattan to Montana. The 18,000 miles she’s hiked and mountains she’s climbed since then include the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide. She will be at Explore Booksellers (221 East Main Street) on Sept. 6, Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Explore’s website says her adventures included “barren deserts, windy ridges, thick woods, estuaries, swarms of bugs, knee-deep mud.”
