The Basalt High School cross country team got its season going on Saturday with its annual Longhorn Invitational at Crown Mountain Park.
Boasting one of the largest fields of runners in recent memory, it was the first in years for BHS without its star duo of Katelyn Maley and Ava Lane, who both graduated this past spring. Maley, a two-time state champion, now runs for Princeton, while Lane runs for the University of Pittsburgh.
In the varsity girls race on Saturday, it was Fruita Monument senior Mackenzie Black who outran the field, winning in 19 minutes, 34.30 seconds. Lake County senior Keira King was second in 20:18.70. The top local finisher was Aspen junior Julia Diaz, who was 11th in 21:18.60. BHS was led by junior Isabella Moon, who was 18th in 22:08.80.
Lake County won the girls team title with 62 points, while Basalt was sixth (197) and Aspen was 13th (320).
In the varsity boys race, Grand Junction Central’s Samuel Garmany easily won in 16:53.40, followed in second by Rangely’s James Talbot (17:22.80).
The top local finisher was Basalt sophomore Towler Scott, who was 10th in 18:21.20. Colorado Rocky Mountain School senior Ben Oldham was 11th in 18:24.50, and Aspen’s top finisher was senior Edwin Ryerson in 27th (19:26). BHS senior Owen Lambert was a spot back in 28th (19:27.70).
